[Updated], November 2023
Issue:
- In Artec Studio 13 and earlier: the "Geometry and Texture" scanning mode doesn't work, with the FPS rapidly dropping to zero. The "Geometry only" mode works correctly.
- In Artec Studio 14 and newer: the FPS (frames per second) is lower than usual.
In very rare cases, similar issues as in Artec Studio 13 and earlier may occur*. - In Artec Studio Log Window UART error message is displayed:
Cause: The issue is caused by the USB 3.1 chipsets (and chipset drivers) installed in the affected PCs. Two solutions to this issue are outlined below.
Solution1:
Note: this solution is only applicable if your computer is equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port.
It is the most universal solution to restore FPS we have tested: Artec USB Kit (we recommend it both for Artec Eva and Artec Space Spider)
Solution 2:
Note: this solution is only applicable if your computer is equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port.
One of the most stable and universal solutions that we have tested, and that enables you to use the scanners at full FPS, is a Thunderbolt Docking station with an external power supply. It works perfectly with both Artec Eva and Artec [Space] Spider scanners. The following models have been tested so far:
HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 (universal for all notebooks)
Dell Dock station (universal for all notebooks))
Important:
- This solution requires a Thunderbolt 3 port and a Thunderbolt 3 adapter with an integrated USB chipset. Regular USB-C to USB adapters will not work.
- In case you previously applied the modified studio.conf file provided in the Solution 1 section above, please close Artec Studio and delete the custom studio.conf file before using the adapter.
- Kanex sells both Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C-type connector) and Thunderbolt 2 (older type connector) adapters. Please make sure that you use the Thunderbolt 3 adapter (MPN: K170-1118-BK6I) exactly as specified above.
- An additional article dedicated to the Kanex Thunderbolt adapter has been published in the Artec Support Center.
Note: apart from the Kanex adapter, we have received reports that the Caldigit Mini-Dock Thunderbolt 3 Dual HDMI/DisplayPort adapter may also be an option. After extensive testing, we discovered that the Caldigit adapter oftentimes requires a USB controller driver update in order to function properly. Furthermore, this adapter seems to be incompatible with some computers (e.g. HP Zbook G5/G6).
Therefore, unless you already own a Caldigit adapter, we strongly recommend getting the Kanex Thunderbolt 3 to eSATA + USB 3.0 Adapter instead.
Solution 3:
Note: solution is only applicable for Artec Studio versions 12 and 13, and comes at the expense of lowering the FPS (scanning speed). In Artec Studio 14 and newer, the FPS is adjusted/lowered automatically*.
* In very rare cases, Artec Studio versions 14 and newer may also be affected. In this case, please scroll down to the "Solution 4" section.
For maximum FPS in all Artec Studio versions, scroll down to the "Solution 2 / Solution 3" sections of this article.
- Download the studio.conf file that matches your Artec Studio version:
- Update your Artec Studio to the latest subversion (release notes are available here).
- Ensure that the Artec Studio application is closed.
- Access the hidden AppData folder by following the instructions specific to your Artec Studio version:
- For Artec Studio 12 users:
Open the hidden folder C:\Users\[your_windows_user_name]\AppData\Roaming\Artec\Artec Studio 12 Professional\12.x.x.xx (or other applicable version) on your PC - For Artec Studio 13 users:
Open the hidden folder C:\Users\[your_windows_user_name]\AppData\Roaming\Artec\Artec Studio 13 Professional (or other applicable version) on your PC
- For Artec Studio 12 users:
- Replace the existing studio.conf file with the modified file which you downloaded in step 1.
- Launch Artec Studio: the "Geometry and Texture" scanning mode should now function correctly, albeit reduced FPS.
For Spider / Space Spider users: (Diagnostic tool and user calibration)
The Diagnostic tool is also affected by the USB 3.1 issue. An external tool is required for calibrating your Spider / Space Spider scanner on affected PCs: USB 3.1 Diagnostic/calibration tool download link.
Usage instructions: Make sure Artec Studio is not running, extract the zipped archive to any folder on your computer and launch diagnostictool.exe.
Solution 4:
Note: this solution is only to be used as a last resort for Artec Studio versions 14, 15.0, and 15.1.
In rare cases when the automatic FPS adjustment fails, manual intervention is necessary.
For maximum FPS in all Artec Studio versions, it is best to resort to the "Solution 2" suggested in this article.
- Download the studio.conf file that matches your Artec Studio version:
- Update your Artec Studio to the latest subversion (release notes are available here).
- Ensure that the Artec Studio application is closed.
- Access the hidden AppData folder by following the instructions specific to your Artec Studio version:
- For Artec Studio 14 users:
Open the hidden folder C:\Users\[your_windows_user_name]\AppData\Roaming\Artec\Artec Studio 14 Professional (or other applicable version) on your PC - For Artec Studio 15.0, 15.1, 16 users:
Open the hidden folder C:\Users\[your_windows_user_name]\AppData\Roaming\Artec\Artec Studio 15 Professional (or other applicable version) on your PC
- For Artec Studio 14 users:
- Replace the existing studio.conf file with the modified file which you downloaded in step 1.
- Launch Artec Studio: scanning should now function correctly, albeit reduced FPS.
