Understanding Fusion algorithms in Artec Studio 19

With each new version of Artec Studio, we continuously strive to enhance performance, accuracy, and usability. In Artec Studio 18, Smart Fusion was introduced as the primary fusion algorithm, and alternative Fusion algorithms  could only be activated manually through the Settings menu.

In Artec Studio 19, alternative Fusion algorithms have been reinstated providing Customers with more flexibility and convenience in 3D scanning projects.

If you don't see the alternative algorithms active in the Fusion menu, please enable them by selecting the "Enable old fusion algorithms" option in the Settings menu. For guidance, refer to the screenshot below for instructions.

Recommended Usage of Fusion Algorithms

Here are our recommendations for choosing the most effective Fusion algorithm based on your scanner and dataset:

  • Smart Fusion – Best suited for:
    • Artec Spider II
    • Artec Ray II
    • Combined data from different scanners
    • Artec Point scans using data with different resolutions
  • Sharp Fusion – Best suited for:
    • Artec Eva
    • Artec Micro II
    • Artec Leo
    • Artec Space Spider
    • Artec Point scans using single resolution data

Performance Comparison

To illustrate the difference in performance, we present the results of Artec Eva with both algorithms on the same dataset (with 0.5 mm resolution):

  • Sharp Fusion completed processing in 9 seconds
  • Smart Fusion took 58 seconds

Smart Fusion Result:

While we provide these recommendations, we encourage users to experiment and determine which algorithm best meets their needs. However, if you are working with combined data from different scanners (or datasets with different resolutions), Smart Fusion is required to ensure optimal results.
