1. General Information
The automatic base removal (ABR) algorithm detects the object's base (i.e. the flat plane on which the object you are scanning is located) and removes it once the scanning process is finished.
Thus, when you scan with ABR enabled, you entirely skip any kind of manual base removal.
2. Using ABR
2.1 Scanning with Automatic base removal
- Make sure the "Enable automatic base removal" option in the Scan panel is selected.
- Start a preview session.
- Direct your 3D scanner at the object area, so that the base is visible.
- The software will detect the base and display it on the screen as a white grid.
- Begin scanning process.
The picture below illustrates the scanned object sits on a white grid, which represents the detected base (a table, in this instance):
2.2. What's Next?
- As soon as you finish scanning and exit the Scan panel, Artec Studio 11 will automatically start the registration process.
- The software will remove the base after fine serial registration.
- All raw scans will be automatically positioned on the XOY plane.
Left: Artec Studio provides a raw scan once the scanning process is complete.
Right: after fine serial registration, the ABR algorithm detects and removes the flat base under the object.
2.3. ABR and Artec Studio UI
- ABR is enabled by default in the Scan panel.
- Artec Studio remembers the ABR state (on/off) between 3D-scanning sessions and when it restarts.
- ABR remains in your project history, so you can undo/redo it at any time.
3. ABR Applications
We highly recommend using ABR whenever the object you're scanning is on a flat surface and you don't need this surface for post processing, or for the final 3D model. In all these cases ABR will save you time: the more scans you record for your project, the more time it saves during post-processing.
Also, ABR is extremely useful for new Artec Eva users, who tend to capture too much raw data.
Keep in mind, however, that we do not recommend ABR in the following cases:
- When you're scanning objects with flat areas (furniture, for example).
- When you're scanning small object with a few geometrical features using Artec Spider (as in this case).
- When you're intentionlly using the base for post processing. For example, if you apply additional texture features to the base and you want to use them for global registration in "Texture and Geometry" mode.
4. Combining ABR and Continuous Scanning modes
We highly recommend using the powerful ABR and Continious Scanning in tandem, as they provide excellent results. Moreover, they offer the following benefits:
- Artec Studio remembers the original position of the base, that is, when you capture several raw scans in continuous scanning mode, the software will remove the base from all of them.
- You do not need to keep the base in the scanner's field of view during continuous scanning, because Artec Studio remembers the base position and tracks it for all scans captured in this mode.
5. ABR Scanning Tips for Experienced Users
- When base removal is unnecessary, begin scanning in a geometrically rich area. The software does not use ABR for such areas.
- Be sure to leave no gaps in the base. For example, avoid capturing the base in the way shown below:
