MS Surface Pro 4

[Update: November 22, 2017]

In addition to an interesting experiment which was conducted in March (see below), we have conducted one more - again, per the request of an Artec client who asked about Artec Spider / Space Spider performance on this tablet. He was interested in a continuous scanning in the field and asked to measure FPS during this scanning session as well as amount of the occupied RAM.

Test conditions:

  • Artec Studio 12
  • "Geometry + Texture" scanning mode, real-time fusion scanning mode disabled
  • Non-stop 3D scanning session

Overall we captured 4500 raw 3D-frames with Space Spider and the experiment showed the following:

  • With 4500th frame captured Artec Studio 12 indicates, that 4.2 Gb RAM is still available and 9.6 Gb RAM is occupied.
  • FPS in this continuous 3D-scanning session was 7 of 8 FPS during the first 20 minutes of non-stop scanning, at the end of the session it decreased a little bit (6.5- 6.7).

So combined with "Backup scan data on disk" scanning option, Space Spider and MS Surface Pro 4 is a great combination for 3D scanning in the field :)

[Update: March 10, 2017]

We received an interesting request from one of our clients: he asked whether Artec MHT of T2 serie would work with MS Surface Pro 4. Despite Artec MHT scanners had been manufactured before the Surface Pro 4 tablets became available and these scanners are no longer in production, we decided to try :)

The great news is that T2 MHT worked well on our Surface Pro 4 (specs are listed below). For scanning experiment we have utilized a USB 2.0 Hub with dedicated power and the tablet was plugged into the wall power outlet while in use. The overall scanning speed was about ~12 FPS, and we did not notice any performance issues. We used the latest Artec Studio version (11.2.2.16) during the experiment.

[Update: June 1, 2016]

We have tested the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet with Artec Studio 11. For our test, we chose the following Surface Pro 4 configuration:

  • Windows 10 Pro OS
  • Intel Core i7-6650U CPU @ 2.20 GHz
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Intel Iris Graphics 540 videocard (driver version: 20.19.15.4326)
  • SSD 256 GB
  • USB 3.0

Artec Studio 11 officially supports the Surface Pro 4 and it includes special optimizations for touch-screens as well as an improved real-time fusion mode that now works on Intel video cards.

The average scanning speed in Geometry + Texture mode is 10-12 frames per second (FPS) for Artec Eva and 6 FPS for Artec Spider.

Note: the exact FPS value depends on the duration of your scanning session.

December 29, 2015

Below we provide the results of our Artec Studio 10 performance test; we checked both the scanning and post processing functions on a Surface Pro 4 tablet.

Scanning: Our goal was to check the average frame rate (in FPS) for different scanning modes. Each raw scan in our experiment contains at least 2 200 frames, and we used the Artec Eva scanner.

  • Average scanning speed in "Geometry + Texture" mode is 12.2 FPS.
  • Average scanning speed in "Geometry" mode is 14.2 FPS.

Post processing: For those who want to post-process a project using the Surface Pro 4, we also provide the approximate timing results (in seconds) for default post-processing parameters:

  • Number of frames in a scan: 2200
  • Fine serial registration (Geometry / Geometry + Texture): 20 sec / 70.3 sec
  • Global serial registration (Geometry / Geometry + Texture): 95.3 sec / 704.2 sec
  • Sharp fusion: 89.6 sec
  • Fast mesh simplification: 27.8 sec

Note that the Intel video card does not support the texture mapping algorithm in Artec Studio 10 and older.
