"Geometry" vs "Geometry + texture" mode (Fine and Global registrations)

This article covers the difference between the registration modes of our post-processing algorithms.

Note that the content of your raw scan may differ depending on the option you select for Features to track in the Scan section:

First of all, let's check what information is recorded in the raw scan for each setting. Depending on your choice of scanning parameters, three configurations are available.


1) "Geometry + Texture" mode

If you select Geometry + Texture, you'll receive a raw scan with three frame types:

  • 3D frames containing geometrical information.
  • Frames containing colorful hi-res texture information that's only for texture mapping. These frames are marked "T" in the frame list. If you use the default scan settings in Artec Studio, the software records them for major geometry changes, as a result, textures will evenly cover your 3D model after texture mapping.
  • Small gray textures that the software records on each frame. They serve no role in texture mapping, since only registration algorithms employ them. Also, these gray frames are hidden in scan and are invisible to the user.

Here are the samples to illustrate the difference, full-size pictures are available at the end of this article.


Depending on the kind of post-processing you need, you can change the registration_algorithm option inside global registration:


  • For objects with rich geometrical features (for example, a statue, a human body), select Geometry. In this case the system will use 3D frames in your raw scan(s) to handle registration.
  • For objects with rich texture (for example, a contrast pattern on a flat surface), select Geomery and Texture. In this case the system will use both 3D frames and gray textures in your raw scan(s) to handle registration.


2) "Geometry" mode with texture recording enabled ("Do not record texture" = OFF)

If you select Geometry and enable texture recording, you will get a raw scan that contains the following information:

  • 3D frames with geometrical information.
  • Frames with colorful hi-res texture, that's only for texture mapping.

We recommend that you switch the registration algorithm to Geometry. If the settings aren't optimal, the system will prompt you to change them:


3) "Geometry" mode with texture recording disabled ("Do not record texture" = ON)

If you select Geometry and disable texture recording, you will get a raw scan that contains only 3D frames.

Our recommendation for post-processing are the same as in previous configuration (p.2).
