Combining Eva and Spider scans

This article will guide you through post-processing settings in case you captured one object with both Artec Eva and Spider. For example, main dimensions and basic geometry were captured with Eva and parts with small geometry were captured with Spider. Artec Studio allows to combine these scans together in one model.

Settings to keep in mind

The most important setting that influence all post-processing parameters is the type of your scanner.
In Eva+Spider project you process the data from 2 types of scanners, so you should switch the settings accordingly.

  • Choose 'M' type scanner for Artec Eva scans.
  • Choose 'S' type Spider scanner for Artec Spider scans.

Sample object

We will use this statue as a sample object. In general its geometry is sufficient for Eva and it can be quickly captured.

As a part of experiment, let's capture small detailing with Artec Spider and then combine the results from both scanners:

Scanning

Step 1 - capture the whole statue with Artec Eva (in one or several scans)

Step 2 - capture small detailing with Artec Spider like it is shown on the picture below.

Align raw scans captured with Eva

(Skip this paragraph if you captured the object in one scanning session or performed 3D-scanning in "auto-alignment" scanning mode)

Here is the sequence:

  • Switch parameters to 'M-type Scanner':
  • Perform alignment:

Separate global registration

For the scan(s) captured with Spider:

  • Switch parameters to 'S-type Spider Scanner':
  • Select scan(s) made with Artec Spider in 'Workspace' section.
  • Launch global registration.

For the scan(s) captured with Eva:

  • Switch parameters to 'M-type Scanner':
  • Select scan(s) made with Artec Eva in 'Workspace' section.
  • Launch global registration.

Note: if the geometry of the object is sufficient, then choose 'geometry only' in properties of global registration. System will calculate 4-10 times faster comparing to default settings ('geometry + texture').

Align Spider and Eva scans

  • Switch parameters to 'M-type Scanner'.
  • Align «Spider scans» with «Eva scans»

"Total" global registration

(this step is not obligatory and may be skipped)

  •  Select all scans (Eva + Spider) in 'Workspace' section
  •  Switch the settings for bigger scanner (in our case Eva, which is 'M-type scanner'):
  •  Launch global registration
  •  If the geometry of the object is sufficient, then choose 'geometry only' in properties of global registration. The calculations will be 4-10 times faster comparing to default settings ('geometry + texture').

Removal of "Eva parts"

Use 2D Eraser to remove the part from «Eva scans» as we have the same place on the raw data captured with Artec Spider.

Fusion

  • Resolution of fusion for Eva is in 0.5 - 2 mm range (1 mm is the value set by default).
  • Recommended resolution for Spider is 0.1 - 0.5 mm (0.3 mm is the default one).
  • In case you combine scans from Eva and Spider, you can use some average value of resolution.
  • Mostly it depends on the quality of your «Eva scans». The quality can be checked in 'Workspace' section, the lower value you have here - the lower resolution for your fusion algorithm you can set).
  • Spider captures super hi-res 3D-geometry :) So even if you set fusion resolution to 1 mm or more, you will still receive much detailed quality on the parts captured by Spider (comparing to the situation when the whole model is captured by Eva and it is calculated with the same resolution).

Result with two different resolutions:

Fusion resolution = 0.5 mm

  • Left model: Eva + Spider
  • Right model: Eva only

Fusion resolution = 1 mm

  • Left model: Eva + Spider
  • Right model: Eva only

Final result

We made 3D-model of our statue with shape captured with Eva and small detailing captured with Spider:

Full sequence of actions:

1) Scan:

  • shape of the object with Artec Eva
  • separate parts with small details with Artec Spider

2) Fine serial registration (automatic)
3) 2 separate processes of global registration:

  • switch settings for 'S-Spider scanner' and launch global registration for «Spider scans»
  • switch settings for 'M-type scanner' and launch global registration for «Eva scans»

4) Switch settings for "bigger" scanner and make:

  • align of «Eva scans» and «Spider scans»
  • global registration for all scans (non-obligatory step)
  • erasing of parts of «Eva scans» that we have on «Spider scans»

5) Launch sharp fusion with necessary resolution.
6) Other processing steps (small objects filter, mesh simplification, texture mapping, etc)
