PC specs for post-processing large objects

Occasionally, the Artec technical support team is asked to provide recommendations on PC specifications required for post-processing large objects (vehicles, turbines, helicopters, planes, buildings, large statues, etc).

The Artec support team mainly has access to two postprocessing PCs:
- a fairly powerful machine: i9-7900X 3.30GHz, 128 GB RAM, GeForce RTX3060
- a somewhat outdated machine: i7-930 2.80GHz, 48 GB RAM, Quadro M4000

The PC with the i7-930 CPU, 48GB of RAM can still handle medium to large objects, while the powerful PC with the i9-7900X CPU, 128 GB of RAM is suitable for postprocessing truly massive projects.
But keep in mind that depending on your scan data, you may encounter situations where even a PC with an i9 CPU and 128GB RAM will not be sufficient.
The rule of thumb is that you need around three times more free RAM than the size of the raw data that you are attempting to post-process.

Also, make sure that you have enough space on your disk (preferably an SSD), especially when using the HD scanning mode on the Leo. During HD conversion and import, the HD data can briefly require up to 4 times more space on the SSD than the project takes up on the Leo.

Post-processing examples:

The PC with the i9-7900X CPU was used to post-process a complete inside-and-out scan of a Mercedes CLK convertible scanned in HD (!) with the Artec Leo.
While the raw data for this project totaled around 100GB, we ended keeping around 30-40 GB of relevant data and working with that.
In total, the postprocessing (manual and automatic steps combined) took around 9 hours.
The final result is pictured below:

Another slightly dated but still noteworthy example of a PC that one of our customers used to post-process a 60Gb-large Napoleon statue scan:

  • Customized Dell workstation.
  • Processor: Dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon CPUs (Despite the fact that CPUs from the Xeon lineup are not recommended, these specific CPUs got the job done).
  • RAM: 64 Gb RAM
  • Video card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (4 GB of dedicated VRAM)
  • Hard drive: SSD

More information on how this statue was scanned is available in this story.

When working with smaller projects, feel free to also consult our minimal hardware requirements.
