How to optimize the performance of your NVIDIA Quadro

General requirements:

  • Artec Studio 11, 12 and 13 support NVIDIA Quadro cards of the К4100М series and later. Older Quadro models such as the 1100M or 2100M are not supported.
  • NVIDIA Quadro cards are not recommended for Artec Studio 9 and 10, although they may deliver acceptable performance after you tweak a certain parameter in the NVIDIA Control Panel (see the "Threaded optimization" section further below).
  • For optimal operation, a very specific version of the NVIDIA graphics driver needs to be installed on your system. More information about driver versions is available in this article.

Optimal settings for Artec Studio 12/13 and Design X

The 3D Systems support team has shared a couple of useful tips which help boost the performance of NVIDIA Quadro cards. We have compiled these tips into a dedicated article.

"Threaded optimization" parameter

For optimal operation of NVIDIA Quadro cards in combination with Artec Studio, we recommend tweaking the "Threaded Optimization" parameter in the NVIDIA Control Panel. This will allow the graphic-intensive algorithms in Artec Studio (e.g. real-time fusion and texture mapping) to perform faster.

  • This tweak is highly recommended for Artec Studio 9 and 10 users
  • The tweak is optional but very beneficial for Artec Studio 11, 12 and 13 users

Please follow the instructions below in order to apply the tweak:

  1. Open Windows Control Panel → NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Click on 3D Settings → Manage 3D settings.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and locate the Threaded Optimization parameter.
  4. Change the value from Auto to Off.
  5. Click "Apply" to save the changes.
  6. Close the NVIDIA Control Panel and launch Artec Studio.

Optional settings for post-processing and viewing extremely large projects

Our Partner Shonan Design has discovered a configuration which accelerates the 3D rendering when rotating your raw scan on the screen:

  1. Open Windows Control Panel → NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Click on 3D Settings → Manage 3D settings.
  3. Switch "Global preset" to Workstation App - Dynamic Streaming.
  4. Click "Apply" to save the changes.
  5. Launch Artec Studio.

Dell Precision M6800 laptop with NVIDIA Quadro K4100M graphics

Some of our customers have reported that the Dell Precision M6800 laptop may randomly switch between the Intel and NVIDIA cards regardless of the setting in the NVIDIA Control Panel. If you are experiencing this issue, please follow the sequence below.

Note: if your NVIDIA driver version is 361.75, please either upgrade to 368.39 (for Artec Studio 11) or revert to 354.42 (for Artec Studio 9 and 10) before following this procedure.

  1. Reboot your PC.
  2. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  3. Navigate to the "Global settings" tab, then choose "High-performance NVIDIA processor" from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click on the Apply button at the bottom of the window.
  5. Return to the "Global settings" tab and click "Restore". Confirm by clicking "Yes".
  6. Click Apply in the bottom part of the window.

Alternative workaround:

  1. Reboot your PC.
  2. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  3. Navigate to the "Global settings" tab, then "Settings"  and scroll to CUDA - GPUs, then clear the Quadro K1000M checkbox. Confirm by clicking OK.
  4. Click on the Apply button at the bottom of the window.
  5. Return to the "Global settings" tab →"Settings" and scroll to CUDA - GPUs, then mark the Quadro K1000M checkbox. Confirm by clicking OK.
  6. Click on the Apply button at the bottom of the window.
