General information
This article addresses the question of USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 compatibility for handheld Artec devices.
Originally, the Artec Eva, Spider, Space Spider, (and older Artec handheld scanners) were designed for USB 2.0 connectivity. As virtually all PC manufacturers made their USB 3.0 chipsets backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices, handheld Artec scanners are generally compatible with USB 3.0.
On a more technical note, it is important to understand that a number of USB 3.0 chipsets offer USB 2.0 compatibility in emulation mode. Therefore, the compatibility will strongly depend on the quality/design of the particular USB 3.0 chipset model.
USB 3.1 chipsets were, by design, supposed to offer the same backward compatibility with USB 2.0. Unfortunately, these newer chipsets present additional issues, especially in laptop computers and other portable PC configurations (i.e. tablets, hybrids, etc).
Please consult the articles "USB 3.1 issues" and "Kanex adapter".
Performance tips
- For optimal performance, the Artec scanner drivers need to be installed correctly.
- While discontinued Artec devices (MHT, MH, S, L and M scanners) will most likely work on USB 3.0 chipsets, older PCs with USB 2.0 chipsets are strongly recommended for these devices.

How to check the chipset manufacturer
To check the manufacturer and series of your USB chipset, go to Windows Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section:
Important: in case you experience USB-related issues, it is strongly recommended to update the chipset drivers to the newest version (Right-click and select "Update driver").
In case you experience any issues with your Artec 3D scanner or require technical assistance with your device or Artec Studio, in the first instance please contact your local Artec dealer/distributor directly.
